CROATIA: Days 3 and 4 - Road, River, and Grappa

The end of our day in Plitvice Park brought us to Korana Village; a tiny, picturesque village on the Korana River. We stayed with a few families who cooked us dinner each night. We ate each meal in the gazebo area - the weather was perfect and there were no bugs.On the morning of day 3, we each picked out a bike and got ready for the 15K ride to the Barac's Caves. We picnicked at the caves, did some exploring and then headed back to the village. The ride was gorgeous; rolling hills through numerous small villages, wild poppys and other bright flowers speckled the lush green surroundings.Time for a post-ride beer in the gazebo!...and a post-beer swim in the COLD river! The next morning we headed south to explore a Serbian monastery. We had lunch at Bobo's house. I'm not really sure who Bobo is, but he lives right next to the kayak outfitter we used, and he provided an amazing lunch of prosciutto, cheese, fresh bread, pickles, eggs, wine, and grappa. Enjoying the food and spirits under a grapevine lattice was very satisfying. After too much wine and grappa, I squeezed into some neoprene shorts and was ready to hit the river. It was a beautiful day to laze down the flowing river in the kayak. And the brief rapids areas were enough to cool you off when you started getting too hot.Or, if someone felt you needed to cool down, he'd just jump in and tip your boat!
I asked if we could go cliff jumping and the guides said yes, so here I am, the first person up to the top of the rock, which was seemingly higher from the top than the bottom... I stood up there for a good 10 minutes while other brave souls launched off; then I completely wussed out and walked down. It wasn't my proudest moment...

Stay tuned for Zadar, Paklenica Park, Trogir, and Kayaking in the Adriatic!

CROATIA: Days 1 and 2 - Overwhelmed by Slaps

Tom and I arrived in Zagreb in the evening, after a day layover in Paris where we climbed the Eiffel Tower and then took a nap underneath (we had a big week ahead of us...) Zagreb is a great city; very hip, very old, and not very crowded with tourists, which is nice. We took a nice walk around, saw a rock concert and choir concert going on at the same time in the main square. We chose to watch the choir because they were singing Tom's favorite: Carmina Burana. Then we found a cute little Kebab place to get a late night snack and wandered back to the Hotel Dubrovnik for a good night's sleep.
We headed South the next morning towards Korana Village and stopped at Rastoke: an old water mill village, and so began our amazement with slaps. Croatian for waterfall, slaps are everywhere!

After a great lunch of sea bass, potatoes and veggies, we headed to Plitvice Park, with amazing blue waters and yes, more slaps.

Ihlabela

Ihlabela/La Isla Bonita/Beautiful Island is located off the coast of Brazil near Sao Paulo. It is beautiful country, and during the off-season (it's winter right now, with 75 degree average temps) the beaches are nearly empty. I'd go back again...

Viva la France!

I got to go to Toulouse and surrounding areas to learn how to accept an Airbus aircraft. Here's what I did in my downtime...
